PROBLEM

Environment: The fashion industry is one of the most polluting in the world, given its overproduction and the great consumption of resources. Fashion is responsible for 20% of the toxins that are discharged into water and for 10% of carbon dioxide emissions. In recent years, our excessive consumption has exacerbated the problem, as garments went from being a valuable acquisition to a disposable purchase thanks to fast-fashion. (Source: Ellen McArthur Foundation)

Every year more than 100,000 million garments are produced in the world, but we use clothes less and less times. In Spain, for example, 76% of our wardrobe has not been used in the last 12 months. This under-use is highly damaging: when we wear a garment less than 5 times and discard it in 35 days, more than 400% of carbon emissions are produced than when we use a garment 50 times and have it for 1 year. In Spain alone, each person generates 14 kilos of textile waste per year and 85% of the clothing that is not used ends up in a landfill. If we continue to underuse clothing, by 2050 the fashion industry will use a quarter of the global carbon budget. (Source: Green Peace).

IMPACT MISSION

Promote responsible consumption: ECODICTA seeks to promote smart and responsible consumption by offering a service for the sharing of fashion items. Thanks to the rental, the users enjoy clothes temporarily without resorting to buying new products; they wear quality garments that are passed on to other users from month to month, lengthening the life cycle of each garment and saving the energy and resources required to produce new garments.

Promote the circular economy: ECODICTA is based on one of the basic principles of the circular economy: optimizing the performance of resources by distributing products, components and materials with their maximum utility. Beyond shared use, the company minimizes textile waste, incorporating upcycling and recycling processes into its system.

Promote local production and employment: ECODICTA seeks to add value to small local producers. Their shared wardrobe is largely sourced from sustainable brands and Spanish designers, with the aim of promoting local talent and offering a new avenue of business to brands that are starting their way in the world of fashion.

ODS INFORMATION

ECODICTA works on the following Sustainable Development Goals and targets:

SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production:

  • 12.4: Achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to the atmosphere, water and soil in order to minimize its adverse effects on human health and the environment.
  • 12.5: Significantly reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse activities.
  • 12.8: Ensure that people around the world have relevant information and knowledge for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature.

SDG 13: Take urgent measures to combat climate change and its effects:

  • 13.3: Improve education, awareness and human and institutional capacity regarding climate change mitigation, adaptation, reduction of its effects and early warning.

IMPACT TARGET GROUP

The groups benefited by the ECODICTA service are the following:

  • Women workers in the textile upcycling and recycling industry: At ECODICTA they offer job opportunities to women in danger of exclusion, paying for the work done to repair and customize the garments of the shared love.
  • Local and emerging designers, who benefit from the sale of products through their system.
  • Society in general, due to the lower negative impact of ECODICTA's activity on the environment.

IMPACT INDICATORS

1) Saving water: With each garment that is rented instead of buying it, 5,000 liters of water are not consumed.

2) Saving carbon dioxide: With each garment that is rented instead of buying it, 35 kg of CO2 are not consumed.

3) Hours of work invested in the transformation of garments: Repair and customization of garments in workshops in Spain and promotion of local employment.

4) People reached and aware of sustainability: Promotion of responsible consumption through communication actions on sustainability, and the values of ECODICTA.
