An innovative rehabilitation center fully adapted to help patients with neurological injuries recover their mobility and independence.
An innovative rehabilitation center fully adapted to help patients with neurological injuries recover their mobility and independence.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
NEUROFIT arises in response to the growing number of cases of people suffering from disability due to a neurological injury. In Spain alone there are 250 new cases of cerebral stroke per 100,000 inhabitants per year (15 million cases worldwide), being the main cause of disability in adults. There are currently 5 million new disabled people in the world every year as a result of a cerebral stroke.
As a solution to this problem, we have designed and developed a fully adapted gym model that combines cutting-edge technology with our own work method based on three pillars: gamification, the elimination of barriers and progressivity. Our goal is to help recover the mobility and independence of people who have suffered a neurological injury or any other injury that affects motor skills, as well as curb their loss in the shortest time possible and in a fun way.
Our vision is to be a reference in the field of advanced neurorehabilitation, making it accessible to as many people as possible through the development of a wide network of centers.
PARTNERS AND ASSOCIATES
NEUROFIT emerged from the minds of María Paz and Javier after firsthand checking that there were no outpatient infrastructures that allowed patients who had suffered a stroke or any other neurological injury to recover their mobility and independence in an adapted, pleasant and motivating environment. But the project would not have been possible without the collaboration of partners, partners, suppliers and collaborators who have been key in each phase of the implementation. Here we detail some:
- Biomechanics Laboratory of the University of Extremadura (UNEX), directed by Dr. Kostas Gianikellys.
- UNEX School of Medicine, with whom we coordinate an advanced neurorehabilitation training program.
- El Corte Inglés S.A., which entrusted NEUROFIT with the attention of its injured professionals through its automutua.
- Caser S.A., Medis, Medicare or HNA who entrust us with the care of their insured.
- Saebo, Technaid, HUR, Prim Group, and other medical equipment suppliers that have made our wishes come true, adapting their equipment to the needs of our patients.
- And many professionals who have given us their selfless help.
PROBLEM
Patients who suffer acquired brain damage, and who have physical and cognitive sequelae, have difficulty accessing the most advanced techniques in recovery of mobility and independence. That is why stroke is the leading cause of disability in countries such as Spain, where there are 300,000 people disabled by this cause.
The most advanced techniques and means are present only in world reference centers, which are either very expensive, or it is very difficult to get a concerted place. It is necessary to socialize and generalize the techniques based on neuroplasticity, in order to improve the life of those patients who have suffered a neurological lesion, and in parallel to alleviate the social and family burden that these patients suppose.
The promoters of the NEUROFIT project detected that there is no ambulatory network of centers that apply advanced techniques to help these patients in their rehabilitation process, and turned this need into a business opportunity.
IMPACT MISSION
ODS INFORMATION
SDG 3 - Health and well-being: The NEUROFIT project aims at sustainable development, ensuring a healthy life and promoting well-being for everyone at all ages.
SDG 10 - Reduction of inequalities: NEUROFIT creates a clear impact in reducing inequalities in two areas: reducing the gap between people with and without some type of neurological disability, and helping people without resources with their future treatment scholarship program.
IMPACT TARGET GROUP
The group to which the NEUROFIT project benefits is very heterogeneous, but the improvement of its independence has a significant social impact. This group would be formed by:
- Patients with acquired brain damage, mainly patients who have suffered a stroke or stroke. Also people who, due to an accident, have suffered a head injury.
- Patients with other neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, ALS, parkinson's, ataxias, cerebral palsy, etc.
- Patients with other limiting diseases and with diseases classified as rare that affect motor skills.
- Older adults - senior - who seek to curb the deterioration caused by age while maintaining their physical abilities and independence.
IMPACT INDICATORS
When a user begins a treatment, a full assessment of the capabilities and sequelae that is presented is performed. This assessment measures different parameters (strength, flexibility, balance, gait, skills for daily life). These parameters are measured again after the period established at the beginning, and which is usually 3 months in most cases. In this way we know which patients improve. In addition, we are in the process of making scholarships for patients with few resources, which we will make through donations from a foundation.
1. INDICATOR OF THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN PHYSICAL TERMS This first indicator measures how many patients have increased their quality of life in terms of physical well-being since the beginning of the activity at NEUROFIT Badajoz. Our goal is to increase the percentage of patients who increase their quality of life annually by 10% through the optimization of exercise plans, the reduction of recovery times and the personalization of treatments to reach 100% of patients.
2. INDEPENDENCE RECOVERY INDICATOR This indicator measures which patients recover their work activity prior to the neurological episode after following personalized treatment in Neurofit, both completely and partially. The recovery of independence and the complete reincorporation of active life is the most ambitious goal in the recovery process of a patient. We intend to increase the percentage of patients who return to their previous work activity by 25% each year, through the implementation of specific programs for patients of working age.
3. CAPACITY RECOVERY INDICATOR Measure how many patients recover at least 3 useful life skills they had lost after suffering brain damage. The increase of the capacities in the patients is fundamental to guarantee the independence of the patients. Our goal is to increase both the percentage of patients who recover at least 3 skills as well as the average number of capacities recovered by all our users.
4. NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIPS INDICATOR It measures how many low-income patients have been awarded scholarships for treatment in the clinic.
